The Mara isn’t a city, it’s a reserve, and that changes the advice. Coverage around camps and conservancies is real but patchy, and it thins out fast the further you get from the main gates.

The right move is to install and activate your Kenya eSIM before you leave Nairobi, rather than trying to sort one out once you’re already on the drive out, since there’s no SIM counter waiting for you at a bush camp.

Once it’s on and connected in Nairobi, it stays with you for the whole trip. Same eSIM, same data, no need to touch it again until you’re back in range of a tower.

Most travelers reach the Mara by road from Nairobi or by a short scheduled flight into one of the airstrips near the reserve, and either way there’s a stretch with no signal at all before camp Wi-Fi (where it exists) picks up again. Having your own data already active means you’re not relying on a lodge’s connection to check messages or share a photo when you do get a bar or two.

Inside the reserve itself, coverage tends to cluster around the main gates and larger camps, with plenty of dead zones in between during game drives. It’s also worth having data ready for the practical side of a safari trip: confirming a pickup time with your guide, checking a flight back to Nairobi, or just letting people know you’ve landed safely after a few days off-grid.
